Classical Italian Villas and Gardens
A Tour in the Footsteps of Edith Wharton
May 17 - 28, 2005

Edith Wharton, one of America's leading ladies of letters (The Age of Innocence and Ethan Frome), was also an inveterate traveler and popular travel writer (Italian Backgrounds and A Motor Flight Through France).

Enamored of the magnificence of the Italian countryside, Edith Wharton also became a renowned connoisseur and expert on the incomparable villas and gardens of Italy. She wrote Italian Villas and Their Gardens in 1904 and it continues to enthrall the American traveler and garden lover.

 Villa Agape, Florence, Italy

Following Edith Wharton's footsteps, Thomas Hayes and Judith Chatfield, leading Wharton and Italian garden experts, have created a two-week journey to some of Italy's finest villas and gardens.

With book in hand, we retrace Edith Wharton's steps to such garden sights as Isola Bella on Lake Maggiore, Villa Cicogna at Bisuschio, Villa Barbarigo near Padua and Villa Gamberaia near Florence.

Such gardens as seen at Villa Balbianello on Lake Corno, Villa Agape near Florence and La Foce near Sienna, though not available in Edith Wharton's time, will also be part of the tour. Many of the excursion's villas will be opened to us exclusively.

Along the way, there will be ample time for shopping, independent sightseeing, and the opportunity to enjoy a rich array of Italian culture. You will also enjoy comfortable hotel accommodations, splendid Italian cuisine and the joy of Italy and it's people. The tour is limited to 24 people, so early reservations are essential.
